The sound waves, in fact, react in a similar way to a ball that’s thrown against a wall. If the wall has a hard surface, it will bounce back whereas, if it’s soft foam, the ball will lose a lot of its energy and hardly bounce, if it does at all.

How Sound Dampening Foam Works

A sound wave bouncing off a hard surface causes a primary reflection, and any subsequent deflections as the sound bounces back and forth produce an echoing effect known as reverberation. In addition to reflection, diffusion can occur when a sound wave hits a surface that isn’t flat, causing it to break up and go off in various directions. All this can cause a confusing mixture of noise that you need to do something about if sound quality is important. You may also need to soundproof a room to prevent sound waves passing through the walls and causing noise pollution elsewhere.

Soundproofing is achieved by hard surfaces that will cause the sound to be deflected back. To reduce the amount of reverberation in a room, however, you need soft surfaces that will absorb the sound and prevent it bouncing about and causing echoes. You can, therefore, fix acoustic foam on top of a hard surface to achieve both effects.
